Paige was sitting in class when her cell phone rang, it was the Salem police department. She slipped out the back of the lecture hall unnoticed to answer the phone.
Paige: Hello?
Phone: Hi, this is the Salem Police Department, may I please speak to Paige Saint Claire?
Paige: This is she.
Phone: Hi Paige. This is officer Schmidt, I’m calling you because we’re concerned about yours and your parents safety, do you have time to come into my office to discuss this concern?
Paige: Yeah, when would you like me to come in?
Phone: The sooner the better.
Paige: Well, I’m in class right now, can I come in after class? Do you want me to bring my parents also?
Phone: After class is fine, I’m here all day, and if your parents are available that would be great.
Paige; Alright, there’s about 20 minutes left of class and then I’ll come in.
Phone: Thanks Miss Saint Claire, see you soon.
*Paige hung up the phone and walked back into the lecture hall. She texted her mom “SPD called, they want us to come in in about 30 minutes, are you free?” Her mom replied “yes, but what for?” Paige: “Idk, they didn’t say. Let dad know?” Mom: “Alright. See you soon. Love you.” At the end of the lecture she went straight to her car and drove to the Police Department.*
Paige: Hi, I’m Paige Saint Claire, I received a call from Officer Schmidt asking if I could come in today.
Person at Desk: He’s in a meeting at the moment, but you can take a seat, and he’ll be with you in a few minutes.
Paige: Thanks.
*She takes a seat and is joined by her mom and dad within a couple minutes and then a tall bulky officer walks out of one of the offices.*
Officer: Hi, I’m officer Schmidt, you must be Paige?
Paige: Yeah.
Officer: Why don’t you come back to my office so we can talk.
*Paige an her parents get up to walk to the office*
Officer: The computer shop called us this afternoon because they were working on repairs for a computer, they came across some suspicious files, including videos, picture, and documented plans of attack. It appears that this man has been stalking you at school, at home, and in public and has begun to make plans to murder your parents to get to you. Luckily we know who the computer belongs to, but when we showed up at his house he was not there. We’re going to be looking for him, but we’re concerned about your safety. We’d like to put you under the Witness Protection Program which would involve you moving and changing your name until the man is found. The government would fund all of the arrangements to make sure that you are safe.
*Paige looked at the officer and at her parents, not knowing whether or not to take what he said seriously.*
Officer: But of course that decision is up to you.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick: Do we have to decide right now?
Officer: No, but the sooner the better. If you need to go home and talk about it, that is fine, but I’d really like to hear back from you by tomorrow so that we can get this process rolling so that we can make sure that no harm comes to your family.
Mr. Fitzpatrick: Will it be safe to return home tonight?
Officer: Well, right now, I’m not sure. There are some of our troops trolling your neighborhood to make sure he’s not there, but you can never be too safe.
Mr. Fitzpatrick: Alright, well, thanks officer, let us discuss this tonight, and we will call you as soon as we make a decision.
Officer: That is fine, I know this is a lot to process, this is my card with my extension so that you can call me directly when you’ve decided.
Mr. Fitzpatrick: Thank you, We will talk to you shortly.
*Paige and her parents get up to leave. They drive home. When they get home they all sit down in the living room to discuss their options. Paige starts crying, terrified.
Paige: I don’t want to lose you guys.
Mom: You’re not going to lose us, we won’t let that happen.
*Her mom gives her a big hug*
Dad: I think we should do the witness protection thing. It would be safest.
Paige: I agree.
*The doorbell rings. Paige gets startled and since her emotions are out of whack a fire ignites on the front door. Her mom and dad stare at her, and the room starts to fill with smoke. The go out the back door, to safety. Paige runs off into the woods on their family property, ashamed of her power hiccup, leaving her parents behind. In the woods she stops by the creek and sits on a rock, crying with her knees in head on her knees she doesn’t even notice the presence of a stranger in the woods with her.*
